Craft Yarn Council celebrates Stitch Away Stress campaign with yarn census
Council will encourage yarn crafters to share their stories and practice their craft(s)

DALLAS (April 1, 2021) - It’s no secret that yarn crafts offer a plethora of positive wellness benefits. From providing a feeling of accomplishment to helping people relax, skills like knit and crochet have long presented an outlet for people to express themselves and create beautiful things with their hands.

Each year in April in celebration of Stress Awareness Month, the Craft Yarn Council shares its Stitch Away Stress campaign to educate people about these wellness benefits. Throughout the month of April this year, CYC will share statistics and research from past surveys to encourage people to work on their yarn projects or even learn a new yarn skill.

“We hope to inspire veteran crafters and newcomers alike to pick up a crochet hook or pair of knitting needles and create something new,” said Jenny Bessonette, executive director of the Craft Yarn Council. “Seventy-six percent of people we surveyed last year reported that they were engaging in a creative activity daily and we want to continue to inspire people to flex their creativity through yarn.”

CYC will also encourage crafters to participate in its Humans That Yarn Census to learn the stories of fiber artists. The census asks participants if they have knowledge of yarn crafts and whether they are actively participating in their craft(s). It also surveys participants on whether they took up or learned their craft(s) in the last year to draw a picture of how many people have practiced their skills during the pandemic.

The survey from the 2020 Stitch Away Stress campaign shows that 93 percent of knitters and crocheters use yarn crafts to slow down and 83 percent practice their craft(s) to relieve stress. In other surveys, CYC has found that 68 percent of fiber artists experience an improved mood after they knit or crochet and 65 percent of people participate in yarn crafts because it provides them with a creative outlet.

Follow along on Facebook and Instagram throughout the month of April to learn more about the positive wellness benefits of yarn crafts and how you can get involved in the campaign. Snap photos of the creative projects you’re working on and post them on social media using #StitchAwayStress.
