Craft Yarn Council conducting first-ever yarn crafting census
Council hopes to paint a picture of today’s yarn crafter
DALLAS (May 3, 2021) - With the results of the 2020 census coming out, the Craft Yarn Council, a nonprofit that promotes yarn crafts, wants to ask the same questions as the national census but for yarn crafters. Through the Humans That Yarn Census, CYC hopes to learn how many people knit and crochet across the globe, why people even participate in yarn crafts, and much more.
The COVID-19 pandemic created a surge in sales for the yarn industry, but even before then, yarn crafts were growing in popularity due to social media and the DIY movement. Long gone is the notion that only grandmothers or women knit or engage in a variety of fiber arts, many of which have a long history of participation among cultures across the world.
Craft Yarn Council hopes to gather research through the
Humans That Yarn Census from as many crafters as possible. The census asks participants if they have knowledge of yarn crafts and whether they are actively participating in their craft(s). It also surveys participants on whether they took up or learned their craft(s) in the last year to draw a picture of how many long-time crafters and newbies alike have practiced their skills during the pandemic.
“Craft Yarn Council is excited about what we’ll learn through our Humans That Yarn Census as we feel it’s time to gather research on a new generation of yarn crafters,” said Jenny Bessonette, executive director of the Craft Yarn Council. “We know there are many people who engage in these crafts and we want to know why and how they participate.”
Along with asking questions about their motivation for crafting, the survey also asks fiber artists to share their stories about how yarn crafts have impacted their lives. Whether they made something for themselves, a family member or friend, or for charity, the council hopes to gather inspiring stories from crafters to share why these crafts are important and impactful.
The council, along with its members, which include yarn companies and accessory manufacturers, will promote the Humans That Yarn Census throughout 2021 and release the results of the census in 2022.
